Our small landholding is 15 acres (7 hectares) in size. It is located in the tranquil Austinville Valley in the Gold Coast hinterland, QLD. For the past 6 years Vici and I have been regenerating that land parcel, bringing it back to its original rain forest/eucalyptus forest condition. We are a recently retired couple. We have planted 5000 native trees. It is unfenced and we do not earn a living off the property. It backs onto forestry bushland. We purely work there each day to restore the wildlife habitat of 100 years ago, while the wildlife habitat of many native birds and animals is being destroyed for development elsewhere. We are making a difference.

Our property is called Whipbird Gully. The Whipbirds distinctive calling sounds never cease to amaze us. Whipbird Gully is our place of solitude, tranquility and relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of 2023 life. We have built a small, comfy hut from second hand materials and fallen trees on our property. The hut comprises of a living room/kitchen, a bedroom and verandah. Outside is a gas pizza hut, a shower and bathroom with gas hot water and an outback dunny. We are totally off the grid, using limited solar energy for our power and rainwater for drinking and showering. There is no TV, washing machine or internet. Mobile phone service is scattered. It is a place of joy and relaxation. It is by no means a five star facility, boasting all the mod cons that seem to control many peoples lives these days.

We own four gorgeous female American Staffordshire Terriers that we have bred ourselves as the owners of Nobbyhounds Kennels. Frankie is 9, her daughter Inca is 6 and Inca's daughter's Gumnut and Tulip are about a year old. We love our beautiful dog family, but it is time for us to do some travel. Apart from Whipbird Gully and our dogs, we love to hike and trek. We are scheduling to walk through Spain and Portugal in September this year and a bit either side (late Aug, early Oct). We need an active, loving carer(s) to look after our dogs and watch over the native birds and animals. In the six years we have owned the property we have never seen a dangerous venomous snake (brown, black, Tiger) on our place. We have seen quiet non-venomous pythons and very few small eyed snakes that scatter quickly if they see you. Small eyed snakes are venomous, but not deadly like some others. I have stepped over them a few times and they just get away as quickly as they can. There are cane toads on the property which we cannot do anything about.

By the time we depart for a holiday we will have built a fence around the hut so the dogs are safe and cannot roam at their will. It will be a large area for them. We walk them regularly, mainly one or two at a time.

This property is suited to a single person or couple. It is not suited to a family. The property sitter/dog minder can either stay in the hut or bring their own van. Electricity is limited so a van owner will not be able to just plug in and run their van off the solar power we generate.

To live here a person or couple need the right attitude. Its relaxed country living in very simple quarters. If you are writing a book or your life story, you will not find a better place to do it. For trips, the gold coast beaches are half and hour away. The quaint village of Mudgeeraba is a 15 minute drive and has all the facilities you require. The highly acclaimed Springbrook National Park and Tamborine Mountain are close by for hiking enthusiasts.
