Assignment Requirements

We live in a quiet suburb with a large backyard with chickens, bees, and vegetable beds.

The six chickens (bantam size) live a glorious free-range life and are let out of the coop and fed in the morning (in summer around 6am) and need to be locked up safe from the foxes on sunset (around 8:30). There will be daily eggs, but they are better company than egg-producers.

The vegetable beds are wicking beds so pretty low maintenance, and there will be plenty of produce to harvest.

We also grow seedlings for a regeneration project and these will need daily watering (or twice daily on really hot days).

Other jobs will include making sure the chooks have fresh water, and cleaning out the poop from the coop.

The house itself is low maintenance, cool and quiet.

Box Hill South is a quiet suburb 20 km from Melbourne CBD. There is a bus route (no 735) which runs to Box Hill Central, where the train station is located and a bus station, but the 735 doesn’t run often (roughly every 35 minutes or so, for certain times of day). Shopping (including groceries) is best done at Box Hill Central. Another option is Burwood Brickworks, but this will require a drive of 10 minutes. The area is lovely, and there is a bike and walking path (the Gardiners Creek trail) nearby, which takes you all the way to the city if you are so inclined. We are about 20 minutes’ walk from Gardiners Creek reserve itself, which is a beautiful extended green space which abuts Deakin University campus.
